Fire protection and rescue services in Jefferson County are provided by your local volunteer fire departments. Those fire departments are staffed by your friends and neighbors.

Unlike living in the city with a paid fire department, residents living in rural areas of Montana, like Northern Jefferson County, need to step up and volunteer if they are to continue to receive adequate fire protection.

Volunteer fire department members are aging and retiring; strong younger individuals are needed to continue the departments' ability to respond to emergencies. Training is free; pagers and personal protective equipment are supplied by the departments

Volunteering with your local VFD has its own rewards: you get an opportunity to use your gifts and talents to contribute to a larger community need. In the process, you get training that gives you new abilities and skills for which you're appreciated by recipients of the VFD's services. You're also recognized by your peers for your accomplishments. If you stay active on a department long enough, there is even a small retirement provided. Finally, you get the opportunity to make some wonderful, lifelong friends with other caring community members.
