Two Jefferson County Fire Departments Work Together Training for Propane Fire Response

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Montana City VFD and Boulder VFD trained together when Dave Mason of the Fire Service Training School conducted Propane Response Training recently in Montana City.

The Boulder VFD firefighters integrated into a response team with Montana City VFD firefighters and worked together as a team as if they had always responded with each other on incidents.

In the classroom, firefighters were taught the finer points of responding to a propane fire – things such as the gallons of water per minute needed, using foam to cover an adjoining house/building to protect it and nozzle settings to best control the flames in order to be able to shut off the propane.

Safety protocols were reviewed in detail so those training do not wind up becoming hurt or even killed during an actual response. Propane fires can be deadly if firefighters are not observant and ignore basic safety rules governing a response to them.

A variety of theoretical and hands-on scenarios were presented that gave firefighters the opportunity to think through how they would respond in different situations.
